Understanding Different Hair Types & How to Care for Them

Hair, a defining feature of human appearance, differs remarkably from individual to individual. Understanding the diversity of different hair types not only allows us to have a more personalized hair care routine, but also provides insight into the complexities of hair care. Learning about these different hair types allows us to learn how to style our hair correctly and choose the best products for our hair, preventing damage and enhancing health. From straight locks to tightly coiled curls, each hair type comes with its own set

of characteristics and care requirements. There are four different types of hair (1-4) and they

are further separated into subcategories based on factors such as curl pattern, thickness and density: A,B and C. Read to explore the spectrum of hair types, and get insights into their unique attributes and tips for effective maintenance.

Type 1- Straight Hair

Straight hair is characterized by its smooth texture and lack of curls or waves. The individual strands may be fine or coarse, thick or thin, but they fall without waving from root to tip. It tends to be shiny and reflects light easily due to its flat structure. People with straight hair often find it easy to manage, as it typically requires less effort to style and detangle. However, this hair type becomes oily very quickly since natural oils can easily travel down the shaft. Many stylists recommend checking the product label to be sure that you’re not buying something that will add extra oil to your hair.

  • Type 1A- The finest and straightest subtype of Type 1 hair. It has a very thin texture which is why it is easily prone to breakage. 1a hair type also tends to have low density, which means that there are fewer hair strands per square inch than other hair types.

  • Type 1B- This subtype is straight with some bends. It can appear fuller and denser than 1a hair but may also be prone to tangling and breakage if not cared for properly.

  • Type 1C- Straight with a coarser texture

Care Tips:

  • Use lightweight, clarifying and volumizing shampoos to prevent weighing down the hair. These shampoos also remove excess oil and buildup. It is also important to avoid over-washing as it can strip natural oils.

  • Use a lightweight conditioner on the ends of your hair in order to prevent dryness without weighing it down

  • Regular trims help maintain a sleek appearance and prevent split ends.

  • Protect from heat damage by using heat protectant sprays before styling. When styling, use volumizing products sparingly at the roots to add lift. It could also help to avoid heavy styling products that can make your hair look greasy.

Type 2- Wavy Hair

Wavy hair falls somewhere between straight and curly, featuring gentle bends and waves. The natural state of type 2 hair is a gentle, tousled (tangled/matted) texture. It is  to be more inclined to frizz compared to straight hair but can hold styles such as beach waves fairly well. Wavy hair often benefits from products that enhance its natural texture without weighing it down. This hair type should avoid oil based products to prevent flattening out the loose wave. People with this hair type should use a light mouse to define the waves in their hair.

  • Type 2A- From roots to eye level hair is straight and then from eye level to the ends there is a loose undefined wave. Type 2A hair is wavy and fine.

  • Type 2B- Type 2B hair curls from the midpoint to the ends. The curls have a more defined S shape. It may require a little more effort to straighten, but it’s easy to create that beachy look with a spritz of salt spray.

  • Type 2C- Type 2C hair is the most well defined S-shaped wave. This hair type is thick and may be prone to frizz in damp weather. A diffuser can be used to remove frizz.

Care Tips:

  • Use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to retain moisture and prevent dryness.

  • Avoid heavy shampoos that can weigh down waves.

  • Applying a lightweight conditioner on the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair can keep waves hydrated without flattening them.

  • Use curl-enhancing creams or mousses to define waves and reduce frizz. You can also use sea salt spray to damp hair to enhance the waves.

  • When styling, you can try to scrunch the hair while drying to encourage wave formation.

  • Air-dry whenever possible to maintain natural texture and minimize heat damage.

Type 3- Curly Hair

Curly hair is characterized by well-defined curls that range from loose to tight curls . It tends to be drier than straight or wavy hair because the natural oils have a harder time traveling down the spiral shape of the hair shaft. Curly hair can be prone to frizz, but with proper care, it can look incredibly lush and voluminous. Further separated into subcategories:

  • Type 3A - S shaped curls form loose loops

  • Brushing this hair type may damage curls and lead to a frizzy mane.Once these curls are dry it is important not to brush hair (this avoids poofiness)

  • Type 3B- Curls spring from the roots and have ample volume

  • To maintain the spiral shape, this hair type needs moisture.

  • Avoid silicone and sulfates in curl products

  • Type 3C - These curls are tight and springy

  • This hair type needs to be taken care of hands on because combing it can lead to frizz and breakage

→ People with this hair type should use a leave-in conditioner and go through their wet hair with their fingertips. “The American Academy of Dermatology recommends air-drying your hair instead of blow-drying.”

Care Tips:

  • Use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners to hydrate curls and minimize frizz. Using a sulfate-free shampoo can be the best to prevent stripping natural oils.

  • Use a rich, moisturizing conditioner to hydrate the curls and define their shape. Detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb or fingers while hair is wet and conditioned.

  • When styling, apply leave-in conditioners, non alcohol foaming mousse or curl creams to damp hair to enhance definition and reduce frizz.

  • Avoid brushing curly hair when dry to prevent disrupting the curl pattern.

Type 4- Coily Hair

Coily hair, also known as kinky or Afro-textured hair, features tightly coiled or zigzag patterns. Type 4 hair is the most delicate type of hair. It is prone to dryness and requires regular moisture to maintain its elasticity and prevent breakage. Getting moisture doesn't mean always using oils. Deep conditioning masques, butters and creams can be great for preserving hair health.  It has the highest density among hair types, which gives it a voluminous appearance.

  • Type 4A- S shaped coil that you can wrap around a chopstick

  • Type 4B - Zig Zag shaped curls

  • One great way for defining these curls is to use a technique called shingling.

→ Shingling starts with wet hair.

  1. Gently detangle with your fingertips, using liberal amounts of leave-in conditioner to moisturize and condition

  2. Separate your hair into four sections.

  3. Work curl cream or gel down the length of each curl, twisting the strands around your index finger as you go.

  • Type 4C- The tightest and more fragile curls which means that it is easy to break them if you comb them roughly.

  • Important to treat the hair with rich conditioners. (coconut oils and shea butter creams)

  • For styling many people with 4C hair embrace their natural texture

Care Tips:

  • Use sulfate-free shampoo like Matt-Free Shampoo it will not strip natural oils from the hair.

  • Deep condition with New Life Deep Conditoner regularly this moisturizing mask will replenish moisture, hydrate and enhance manageability.

  • Detangle hair gently with fingers or with a wide-tooth comb.

  • When styling, apply a leave-in conditioner or curl cream to damp hair to define curls and minimize frizz. Use oils or butters to seal in moisture and protect hair from dryness.

  • Protect hair at night by sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase to reduce friction and breakage.

  • Do not use scrunching or plopping techniques as these techniques are meant to make the pattern tighter, and will increase shrinkage if used on type 4 hair.
